10 of the best maternity dungarees
Is there anything more comfortable than maternity dungarees? And is there anything more important than being comfortable when you’re pregnant? To be quite honest, the thought of wearing anything else during pregnancy fills me with horror. Sure, there are plenty of great maternity options out there (read our 5 must-have items for your maternity wardrobe article to see our fave alternatives) but nothing compares to the sheer comfort and breathability of maternity dungarees. When you’re 8 months pregnant and you’ve just eaten a huge meal, they really are your BFF. Everything about them is perfect for a growing bump. From conception to 9 months, they are a wardrobe staple for any pregnant women and something that I guarantee you will want to wear for months after too.
What are dungarees?
We all remember dungarees from our childhood. They were the outfit of choice for afternoon bike rides and sunny days at the park. Long before that they were the workwear for hard labour, providing a robust and long lasting uniform for all the wore them. Fast forward to 2022 and along with the chokers, the grungy berry lips and the scrunchies of the 90’s, dungarees are back in business… if they ever even left?
So, what are they? The Oxford dictionary defines dungarees as ‘a garment consisting of trousers with a bib held up by straps over each shoulder, made of denim, corduroy, or heavy cotton and worn as casual or working clothes’. This is still loosely correct. They are trousers with a bib, held up by straps over both shoulders. But, they are also shorts held up by a bib and skirts held up by a bib. Long gone are the heavy materials of yesteryear too. Whilst denim is still a popular choice, you can also find gorgeous, lightweight summer alternatives that are perfect for during pregnancy.
Why are they perfect for pregnancy?
Have you ever tried wearing maternity jeans? As useful as they can be, you will want to whip them off as soon as you possibly can. They feel tight on your legs, tight on your bump and if you’ve eaten a big meal you will want desperately to undo the top button immediately. A growing bump needs room to, well, grow, and maternity dungarees allow for exactly that. There is no waistband pressing against your stomach. There’s no fly or zipper. Just lots of fabric resting softly over your bump, giving you room to breath and relax. You can put them on first thing in the morning and forget all about them until it’s time for bed.
