5 must-have items for your maternity wardrobe

My sister and I had our babies within the same 5 year window and so we collected and shared a mass of maternity clothing to see us through each pregnancy. I can safely say, some maternity wear is a total waste of time but there are some pieces that will see you happily through most of your waddling days.

Here are my 5 must-have items for your maternity wardrobe. I’ve given examples for each too, but shop around, there are loads of options available (online at least, the high street is like the ghost town of maternity clothes).

1. Cotton Maxi Dress

This will be one of the most comfy things you will wear. It won’t feel tight around your bump (urgh) and you can eat a meal and still have plenty of room to breath.

2. Long Shirt

Another comfortable item that looks and feels smart. Perfect for during the day with leggings and trainers and great for an evening out with heels (if you can still bare to wear them).

3. 3 in 1 Hoodie

This hoodie takes you from bump to baby and beyond. With built-in stretch panels at the sides, it will grow with you. Once your baby is here, there is an extra panel so that the hoodie fits easily over your baby carrier. Perfect for keeping your little one warm.

4. Soft Dungarees

Do I even need to explain? These are so comfortable and so functional, you really can’t be without them. The soft material is a must too (denim is not a pregnant woman’s friend). The only downside? You will need to take them off to wash them once in a while.

5. Leggings

The saviour of the maternity wardrobe, you will wear them ALL the time. Great with jumpers, shirts, vest tops… you name it. Most places offer ‘over the bump’ (shown here) and ‘under the bump’ options.
