10 baby shower gifts just for mum
At a baby shower, the mum-to-be will undoubtedly be gifted a range of beautiful and practical gifts for baby, from babygrows and muslins to bibs and nappies, so it makes a really nice change to buy a baby shower gift that’s just for mum instead. Something that she can use and enjoy herself.
What is a baby shower?
The baby shower was first born in the USA and in recent years has become a popular tradition here in the UK too. It’s a chance for family and friends to get together and celebrate the imminent arrival of a new baby. They often take place at someones house or a small venue and they will have a very strong baby theme (think baby balloons, baby related games and baby decorations).
Most baby showers have a female focused guest list, rounding up the mum-to-be’s closest friends and family to all come together and celebrate. Usually lasting for 2/3 hours, there will often be food, cakes, decorations, drinks, baby shower games and, of course, gifts.
How much should I spend on a baby shower gift?
This is completely up to you. There are no expectations on what you should spend, so spend within your limits. I think the main point of a baby shower isn’t so much the gifts at the end (although these are lovely, of course!), but the time you spend with the mum-to-be, making her feel special and loved, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
If you don’t have a huge budget, opt for something small and make it feel special with beautiful gift wrapping and a hand written card. Alternatively, if you fall in love with a baby shower gift that’s over your budget, consider clubbing together with someone else. This is a really nice way to get something extra special that you wouldn’t normally be able to afford.
If I buy a baby shower gift, do I also need to buy a gift when the baby is born?
If the new mum had a baby shower and gifts were exchanged, it’s very unlikely that she will be expecting another gift once the baby is born. Instead, after baby arrives, why not send a congratulations card through the post or visit with some homemade food to help out the new parents (read The Etiquette of Visiting Parents With a Newborn Baby here).
